Guide For Use: The substances whose use is covered by the Medications or Other Substances Common Formats, with the exception of expressed human breast milk, are articles or substances regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). See, Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).
A 'medication' is a type of drug.
A 'biological product' means any virus, therapeutic serum, toxin, antitoxin, or analogous product applicable to the prevention, treatment or cure of disease or injury. 21 CFR 600.3
A 'nutritional product', for the purposes of these Common Formats, does not include "conventional" food.
'Expressed human breast milk' is human breast milk that was produced by manipulating the lactating breast, either by hand or with a breast pump.
A 'Medical gas (e.g., oxygen, nitrogen, nitrous oxide)' also includes medical air or an inhalation anesthetic and, when manufactured, packaged and intended for administration to a patient in anesthesia, therapy or diagnosis, constitutes a type of drug.
'Contrast media' constitute a type of drug. They are used to enhance the contrast of structures or fluids within the body during medical imaging.
A 'radiopharmaceutical' is a radioactive chemical or pharmaceutical preparation that is labeled with a radionuclide in tracer or therapeutic concentration and this is used as a diagnostic or therapeutic agent.
