Guide For Use: A surgical site infection (SSI) is defined in the CDC NHSN Manual.

An implant is a nonhuman-derived object, material, or tissue that is permanently placed in a patient during an operative procedure and is not routinely manipulated for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Examples include: porcine or synthetic heart valves, mechanical heart, metal rods, mesh, sternal wires, screws, cements, and other devices.

If (1) the infection being reported is not an SSI in a patient operated on at this facility in the previous 30 days or, in the case of an SSI relating to the placement of an implant, in the previous year, and (2) you are unable to choose among the last four answers, make no selection and stop.
